Welcome to the website of Leyburn Town Council. Leyburn is a small market town located in beautiful Wensleydale in North Yorkshire and close to the eastern edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The town has a population of 2,300 and is the main service centre for the villages of the mid-Wensleydale area and offers a fantastic range of specialist local shops and two supermarkets as well as doctors, dentists etc. Every Friday the town’s main square is home to the weekly market with its extensive range of stalls. Leyburn can boast several excellent restaurants, bistros, cafes and pubs as well as holiday accommodation of all types for those wishing to visit the Dales. Close to the town centre is Leyburn Shawl with its panoramic views across Wensleydale and its popular footpath that leads out of town and on to Castle Bolton and Redmire. The Town Council owns the first three fields of the Shawl as well as the playground also located there which is enjoyed by many children and their families.
For information about the Leyburn Town Plan please see under 'Council' above or CLICK HERE and for information on the area see the Lower Wensleydale website.
The Town Council is based in Thornborough Hall, a magnificent Victorian building, located close to the town centre, which the Town Council bought in 2001. The building is also home to the town’s library and registry office and other privately-let offices
Leyburn Town Council is the local burial authority and also runs the weekly Friday market, Monthly Sunday Market, the Shawl Fields, the Shawl playground, the Wensleydale Avenue playground and the public conveniences at Kelberdale Terrace in the town centre. The Council looks after the clock in St Matthew’s Church and owns and maintains the town’s three squares.
There are nine Town Councillors and the Council meets every third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. in Thornborough Hall. Agendas are posted on the Town Council noticeboard in the town centre opposite Hewson's Newsagents shop and here on this website. Minutes are available after the following month's meeting.
